| T o p i c : Colonoscopy |
| . |
| Q:
Is
it recommended for all women over fifty? |
| . |
| A: Current protocols for routine surveillance for colon polyps (precancerous)
and colon cancer in average risk individuals include digital rectal exam, stool blood
tests and flexible sigmoidoscopy for both men and women. Newer recommendations from some
advisory panels and many physicians include colonoscopy for men or women
after age 50. High
risk individuals must follow an entirely different protocol. As with any invasive
procedure, the risks and benefits must be evaluated for each individual taking into
consideration their individual medical history, family history, signs or symptoms of
possible illness, their desire for preventive care (that may not always be reimbursed by
insurance plans) and their individual tolerance for the inconvenience and risk of the
preparation and procedure. All things considered, I would recommend to the women in my
family who are over 50 to consider the colonoscopy option and to discuss this matter with
their primary care physician. |
